Progress in Hydrogen Steelmaking Projects

China’s MCC Jingcheng’s 1.2 million-ton hydrogen metallurgy project at HBIS Zhangxuan Technology has achieved an annual carbon dioxide reduction of 800,000 tons. Its coke oven gas zero-reforming technology has enabled a hydrogen-carbon ratio in reduction gas exceeding 8:1, with a product metallization rate of 94.5%. The second phase will fully integrate Zhangjiakou’s green hydrogen to create a "green power-green hydrogen-green steel" closed loop. Nippon Steel is advancing blast furnace hydrogen reduction technology through the GREINS project, planning to conduct large-scale hydrogen injection tests at the No. 2 blast furnace in its Kimitsu Plant by 2026, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 50%. The European Union is also ramping up green hydrogen infrastructure, with RWE piloting a 10% hydrogen-blended natural gas network to pave the way for industrial decarbonization.
